Abuja, Nigeria – The Supreme Court has overturned a previous Court of Appeal ruling that recognized Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP).
In a unanimous decision delivered today, a five-member panel of the apex court declared that the Court of Appeal in Abuja lacked the authority to declare Abure as the LP’s national chairman. The Supreme Court reasoned that the core issue of the case revolved around the Labour Party’s leadership, which is considered an internal affair beyond the jurisdiction of the courts.
The Supreme Court upheld the appeal brought forward by Senator Nenadi Usman and another individual, deeming it meritorious. Consequently, the apex court dismissed the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the Labour Party as lacking merit.
This ruling effectively sets aside the Court of Appeal’s judgment, throwing the leadership of the Labour Party into renewed uncertainty. The Supreme Court’s stance underscores the principle that the judiciary should generally refrain from intervening in the internal administrative and leadership disputes of political parties.
