Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has responded to the growing backlash trailing the recent incident involving Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, urging the public not to exaggerate what she described as “minor missteps”.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the First Lady sought to clarify the circumstances surrounding the encounter, which had sparked widespread discussion across social and political circles. Mrs Tinubu maintained that her comments and actions during the event had been misconstrued, insisting that there was no intention to undermine or disrespect Governor Adeleke.
“I acknowledge that, like every human being, I am not immune to the occasional misstep,” she said. “However, it is important that such moments are not blown out of proportion or used to fan unnecessary controversies.”
Mrs Tinubu emphasised her respect for the office of every elected official and reiterated her commitment to fostering unity, decorum, and cooperation across all levels of government.
She noted that public discourse should be guided by fairness and context, especially at a time when the nation requires collective focus on governance, stability, and development.
The First Lady also called on Nigerians to “rise above sensationalism” and resist the urge to politicise isolated moments, stressing that the country benefits more from constructive engagement than from amplifying perceived slights.
The incident had sparked heated conversations online, with critics accusing Mrs Tinubu of overstepping protocol, while supporters argued that her actions had been misinterpreted.
With her latest statement, the First Lady appears keen to put the matter to rest, urging the public to prioritise national unity over controversy.
