The South Eastern Senators have thrown their weight behind President Tinubu’s tax reform bill. This endorsement comes after a private meeting between Senator Orji Kalu and President Tinubu, where the president sought support from the South Eastern region.

This is even as some groups from the north had vehemently kicked against the t reform alluding that major infrastructure in the country were constructed with the ground nut and cotton production from the north, therefore making the current tax reform regime of the present administration a calculated attempt at sidelining the north under the guise of regional government.

However the southern senators at the national assembly in support of the bill saw the development as the best for the fiscal allocations from the federation account which will encourage not just productivity but enhance revenue generation for equitable distributions of the nations wealth.

According to a statement from Senator Orji Kalu, the Tax Reforms Bills were thoroughly deliberated during the South-East Senate Caucus meeting. While the senators agreed to support the bill, they also emphasized the need for extensive consultations with all major stakeholders to make necessary adjustments in the best interest of the people and Nigerians at large.

This development follows last week’s endorsement of the tax reform bills by Senators from the South-South geopolitical zone. In a communiqué, the South-South Senators stated that the bills will foster economic stability and development. They also called on their colleagues from the North to shun sentiments and study the proposed legislation.

The tax reform bills have been a topic of discussion among lawmakers, with some opposing the bills. However, with the support of South Eastern and South-South Senators, the bills may gain momentum.
