A leadership crisis has intensified within the Sokoto State chapter of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), as a faction led by State Secretary Yusuf Abdulkadir Alkali firmly rejected the reinstatement of Bello Isiyaku as the state chairman.

Speaking at a press conference on Sunday, Alkali reiterated that Hon. Umar Muhammad Faruk remains the recognised chairman of the party in Sokoto. He explained that Isiyaku was suspended prior to the 2023 general elections due to internal disputes tied to his governorship ambitions on the ADC platform.

Alkali underscored that Faruk’s leadership was ratified by the party’s national executives, led by Ralph Nwosu, during the ADC national convention held in Zaria in September 2022.

“At our last meeting, attended by 25 members of the state executive committee, 18 voted in favour of reaffirming Hon. Umar Muhammad Faruk as chairman,” he said.

He described attempts to reintroduce Bello Isiyaku into the leadership as “unconstitutional and unacceptable.” Alkali accused certain party elders of sowing division within the ADC, but stressed the majority remain loyal to Faruk and the national leadership.

“The state executive committee has unanimously resolved to reject Bello Isiyaku’s claim. It restates its loyalty to Hon. Umar Muhammad Faruk,” he added.
