Vice President Kashim Shettima has defended the economic reforms introduced by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that the administration deserves commendation rather than condemnation for taking difficult but necessary decisions aimed at repositioning Nigeria’s economy.
Speaking during a public engagement, Shettima said the Tinubu administration inherited deep-rooted economic challenges that required bold and sometimes painful reforms to avert a more severe economic crisis. He argued that while the measures have placed temporary pressure on citizens, they were designed to stabilise the economy, restore investor confidence and lay the foundation for sustainable growth.
According to the Vice President, history has shown that meaningful economic transformation often demands courageous leadership and difficult policy choices. He maintained that President Tinubu should be recognised for demonstrating the political will to implement reforms that previous administrations had avoided.
Shettima noted that the government’s economic agenda is beginning to yield positive indicators in key sectors, expressing confidence that Nigerians will increasingly experience the long-term benefits of the reforms as implementation progresses.
He urged Nigerians to remain patient and supportive, stressing that the administration remains committed to expanding social intervention programmes, creating employment opportunities and improving the overall standard of living.
“The President deserves commendation, not condemnation, for making difficult decisions that are in the long-term interest of our nation,” Shettima said, adding that the government will continue to pursue policies aimed at achieving economic stability, inclusive growth and national prosperity.
The Tinubu administration has consistently maintained that its reform agenda is intended to build a more resilient economy capable of delivering lasting benefits for present and future generations, despite the short-term sacrifices required during the transition.
