Abuja, Nigeria – Senator Orji Uzor Kalu has expressed his full support for the Senate’s approval of electronic transmission of election results from polling units, calling the move a “step forward for transparency and credibility” in Nigeria’s electoral process.

Speaking after an emergency Senate plenary on Tuesday, Kalu said the adoption of the amended Clause 60(3) of the Electoral Act allows presiding officers to transmit results electronically once Form EC8A has been duly completed and signed.

“This balanced approach strengthens transparency, fairness, and credibility in our electoral process, while ensuring that voters in network-challenged communities are not disenfranchised,” Kalu said.

He emphasized that electronic transmission will serve as the primary method where technology is available and functional, while the signed Form EC8A remains valid in cases where electronic transmission is impossible.

“Our democracy must work for every Nigerian, everywhere,” Kalu added, highlighting the Senate’s commitment to inclusive and trustworthy elections.

The decision comes amid ongoing discussions on modernising Nigeria’s electoral processes to reduce delays and increase public confidence in election outcomes.
