The Senate has called for stricter safety measures in Nigeria’s mining sector following a deadly landslide at a coal mining site in Kogi State that left at least 20 people dead.
The resolution was adopted during Tuesday’s plenary after a motion sponsored by Senator Isah Jibrin, who represents Kogi East, highlighting growing concerns over safety standards and regulatory enforcement in the country’s mining industry.
Lawmakers described the tragedy as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by unsafe mining practices and urged the Federal Government to strengthen oversight of mining operations to prevent further loss of lives.
The Senate also called on relevant agencies to intensify inspections, ensure strict compliance with existing safety regulations, and hold operators accountable for violations. It further urged authorities to provide support for the families of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
The latest resolution comes amid increasing concerns over recurring mining accidents across Nigeria, with lawmakers stressing that stronger regulation and enforcement are essential to protecting workers and communities in mining areas.
