United States President Donald Trump has praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership in tackling terrorism, describing the Nigerian leader’s efforts as decisive and reaffirming Washington’s commitment to strengthening security cooperation with Nigeria.
The commendation was contained in a letter dated 6 July 2026, released on Tuesday by the Presidency through the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
In the letter, Mr Trump applauded Mr Tinubu’s resolve to confront insecurity, particularly attacks targeting Christian communities, and pledged continued American support in the fight against terrorism.
“It is a true honour to stand with you in the fight against these terrorists and to make the Federal Republic of Nigeria stronger and more prosperous,” the US president wrote.
Mr Trump said the United States considered its relationship with Nigeria increasingly important as security challenges continue to spread across West Africa and other parts of the world.
He noted that both countries shared a common objective of defeating terrorism in all its forms, adding that the US-Nigeria 2026 Defence Cooperation Roadmap provides a solid framework for deepening military collaboration.
The US president also disclosed that American Special Operations Forces had been deployed to train members of the Nigerian Armed Forces, equipping them with advanced skills, intelligence and operational tools to strengthen the country’s counter-terrorism capabilities.
According to him, the support is aimed at improving Nigeria’s ability to safeguard its territory and protect civilians, particularly vulnerable communities affected by extremist violence.
Mr Trump expressed optimism that both nations would continue to expand their security partnership during his presidency, describing the alliance as critical to promoting stability and prosperity across the region.
The Presidency said the correspondence reflects the growing defence and diplomatic ties between Abuja and Washington as both governments intensify efforts to combat terrorism and regional insecurity.
