Senator Gbenga Daniel, Chairman of the Senate Committee on Navy (APC, Ogun East), has categorically dismissed reports alleging that Senate President Godswill Akpabio was hospitalised in London. The claims, which surfaced in certain media outlets, were branded as baseless by Senator Daniel, who recently met with Akpabio during a brief stopover in London.
The visit was to formally notify the Senate President of Daniel’s return to Nigeria to participate in the upcoming bye-election on 16 August for the Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State. The seat became vacant following the passing of the former Deputy Whip of the House of Representatives, Hon. Adewumi Onanuga.
Speaking during the meeting, Senator Daniel, a former Governor of Ogun State, remarked, “I am here to formally brief you, Mr Senate President, on my return to Nigeria for the 16 August bye-election. Contrary to circulating reports of your ill health, it is abundantly clear that you are in excellent spirits. My congratulations, Your Excellency.”
In response, Senate President Akpabio expressed gratitude for the courtesy visit and voiced confidence in the All Progressives Congress (APC) retaining the constituency seat. “With the steadfast support of Governor Dapo Abiodun, yourself, and other key stakeholders in Ogun State, I am certain our party will triumph in the forthcoming election,” Akpabio stated, according to a statement by his Special Assistant on Media, Jackson Udom. He added, “I congratulate you in advance, as your deep-rooted connection to the constituency, alongside the Governor’s support, leaves no doubt of our success.”
Addressing the erroneous media reports, Akpabio dismissed the speculation, cautioning against the perils of unverified social media narratives. “One mustn’t heed every rumour online, lest it leads to unwarranted alarm,” he quipped.
The Senate President’s vibrant demeanour and firm assurances underscore his commitment to supporting the APC’s campaign efforts in Ogun State, dispelling any doubts about his wellbeing.
