The Social Democratic Party (SDP) has expelled its National Chairman, Youth Leader, and several other senior officials over what it described as gross misconduct and violations of the party’s constitution.

In a statement issued after an emergency National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Abuja, the party announced that the decision followed a thorough investigation into allegations of financial impropriety, abuse of office, and activities considered detrimental to the unity and image of the SDP.

According to the communiqué, the expelled members were found guilty of engaging in anti-party activities, including unauthorised meetings, public statements that undermined the party’s leadership, and attempts to destabilise its internal structures.

The NEC stated that the disciplinary measures were necessary to restore order and reinforce the principles of transparency, accountability, and loyalty that the party stands for.

“The SDP will not tolerate any behaviour that threatens its integrity or unity. The party remains committed to internal democracy and will continue to take decisive action against any member who violates its rules,” the statement read in part.

The party also announced that interim officials would be appointed to fill the affected positions pending a national convention, where new leaders will be duly elected.

Political observers say the move reflects ongoing internal power struggles within the SDP as it positions itself ahead of the next general elections.
