The Peoples Democratic Party in Kwara State on Saturday elected Adamu Bawa as its new state chairman at the party’s congress held in Ilorin.
Bawa, who previously contested the Kwara North Senatorial seat in the 2023 general elections, emerged unopposed at the congress. Alongside him, AbdulRahman Kayode was elected State Secretary, while Olusegun Adewara clinched the position of Publicity Secretary, among other officials.
Former Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, hailed the outcome of the congress, describing it as a clear reflection of internal democracy within the party.
“The PDP has once again shown that it is the party that provides a level playing field and prioritises the will of the people,” Saraki said.
He added, “At PDP, the INEC officials can see that we are very mature and peaceful. I am very sure that in other parties’ congresses, you will need security because they are not coordinated and may end up throwing chairs, as they usually do. The maturity displayed in Kwara State congresses is a reflection of the national character of our great party.”
Also speaking, the immediate past chairman of the party in Kwara, Babatunde Mohammed, stressed that the PDP remained a strong opposition force in the state.
“As far as the Kwara PDP is concerned, we are one big family, well prepared for the task ahead. With the support of the people, we are firmly on the ground and ready to challenge the APC as the main opposition party in 2027,” he declared.
In his acceptance speech, the new chairman, Bawa, pledged to work closely with stakeholders to reposition the party ahead of the next general elections.
“We are committed to the development of the party both at the state and national levels. We will work together with stakeholders to regain power in Kwara State in 2027,” he said.
