The Rivers State House of Assembly has declared that no form of political intervention or negotiated settlement will deter it from pursuing the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, deepening an already tense political standoff in the oil-rich Nigerian state.
Speaking on behalf of the Assembly, its spokesperson said lawmakers were resolute in their decision and would not abandon the impeachment process, even if a political solution were proposed.
“Nothing, even a political solution, will stop us from impeaching Fubara,” the spokesperson said, underscoring the legislature’s determination to proceed with its actions against the governor.
The statement signals an escalation in the power struggle between the executive and legislative arms of government in Rivers State, where political divisions have intensified in recent months.
While details of the specific allegations against Governor Fubara were not outlined in the latest remarks, the impeachment threat has raised concerns among political observers about governance stability and the potential impact on public administration in the state.
Efforts by party leaders and other stakeholders to calm tensions have so far failed to yield a breakthrough, as both sides appear entrenched in their positions.
The Rivers State government has yet to issue an official response to the Assembly’s latest declaration.
