A former political ally of ex-Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, Dr Sokonte Davies, has left the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and returned to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), in a move that could reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 elections.

Mr Davies, a former governorship aspirant and founding member of the ADC, announced his return to the APC in a statement issued on Wednesday.

He said the decision followed consultations with his family, political associates, constituents and elders.

According to him, he had carefully considered where he could best serve the interests of his people and contribute to the political and economic development of Rivers State.

Mr Davies also cited his desire to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid and contribute to political stability in Rivers State as reasons for his return to the APC.

“This decision has not been taken lightly. It flows from deep reflection, patriotic conviction, and a clear-eyed assessment of where I can best serve our people,” he said.

Describing the move as a “homecoming”, Mr Davies recalled that he had been a foundational member of the APC before joining the ADC.

He said he remained committed to what he described as the party’s principles of democracy, social justice, true federalism, inclusive growth and respect for the rule of law.

Mr Davies also thanked the ADC leadership and members for the opportunity to serve, stressing that he bore no ill will towards the party.

“Politics is a marketplace of ideas; we can disagree without being disagreeable,” he said.

His defection comes amid intensifying political manoeuvring in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections, with rival political camps working to consolidate their structures and attract influential figures.

The Rivers ADC had criticised Mr Davies after he was seen alongside FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and other members of the Rainbow Coalition, questioning his decision after failing to secure the party’s governorship ticket.

Mr Davies has now formally returned to the APC, where he has pledged to work with party leaders and members at the ward, local government, state and national levels.

He also called on his supporters and like-minded politicians to join him in the APC ahead of the 2027 elections.
