Nigeria’s House of Representatives has approved a request by President Bola Tinubu to secure a $516.3m foreign loan for the construction of key sections of the ambitious Sokoto–Badagry Superhighway.

The approval was granted during plenary on Tuesday at the lower chamber of parliament, following the presentation of a report by Abdullahi Rasheed, deputy chair of the Committee on Aids, Loans, and Debt Management.

Lawmakers said the funding is intended to accelerate work on the strategic highway, which is designed to improve connectivity across northern and southwestern Nigeria and boost trade corridors linking inland states to coastal export routes.

The decision marks another step in the administration’s push to expand major infrastructure financing through external borrowing, despite ongoing public debate over Nigeria’s rising debt profile.

The House did not record significant opposition during the session, effectively clearing the way for the executive to proceed with the financing arrangements for the project.
