George Baldock, a former Premier League defender and Greece international, has posthumously left a £4 million inheritance to his baby son, Brody, following his tragic death in Athens.
The 31-year-old footballer, who was playing for Panathinaikos at the time, was found lifeless in the swimming pool of his Glyfada residence. Emergency responders arrived after his fiancée, Annabel Dignam, raised the alarm when she couldn’t reach him for hours. A coroner’s report confirmed the cause of death as accidental drowning, with no traces of alcohol or drugs in his system43dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa16205443dcd9a7-70db-4a1f-b0ae-981daa162054.
Baldock had been scheduled to fly back to England the next day to celebrate Brody’s first birthday. Instead, his family was left to mourn a man described as “the most special father, fiancée, son, brother, uncle, friend, team-mate and person.”
Probate documents revealed that Baldock died intestate, leaving behind an estate valued at £5.78 million before debts, with a net worth of £4.09 million. The entire sum will be held in trust by Dignam “for the use and benefit of minor Brody Baldock” until he turns 18.
Born in Buckinghamshire, Baldock qualified to play for Greece through his grandmother and earned 12 caps for the national team. His move to Greece in 2024 marked a new chapter in his career, which was cut short just a year later.
In a heartfelt tribute, Annabel wrote:
“George, the love of my life, my soulmate. The perfect Dad to our beautiful boy. You completed me. You were my world and I know we were yours. You are here with me in Brody’s smile, giggle and infectious personality. My world will never be the same but I will find a way for Brody. I promise. I love you forever and always G. Your Neen. X.”
The Baldock family also shared their grief, saying:
“We will forever cherish the special memories we have of you and you will continue to live on in your beautiful son. You were due to fly home today for us to celebrate his first birthday together, but instead we mourn your loss.”
Tributes have poured in from fans, teammates, and football clubs across Europe, honouring Baldock’s legacy both on and off the pitch.
