The Kwankwasiyya movement has confirmed that former Kano Governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and the 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, are finalized to defect to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The move, expected to be formalized by Monday or Tuesday, follows a breakdown in the leadership structure of the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Habibu Mohammed, spokesperson for the Kwankwasiyya movement, told reporters on Friday that the decision was reached after a unanimous vote by stakeholders from all 44 Local Government Areas of Kano State.
“The stakeholders have given the go-ahead. Discussions with the NDC are about 90 percent complete,” Mohammed said. “We believe both Kwankwaso and Peter Obi, along with other key allies, will be joining the NDC to provide a more stable platform.”
The exodus is largely attributed to the Supreme Court’s recent decision to return the ADC’s leadership dispute to the Federal High Court, a move stakeholders believe creates too much legal uncertainty. Mohammed described staying in the ADC as “waiting for Godot,” citing the looming INEC deadline for party membership registers.
The defection also follows reports of Peter Obi’s dissatisfaction with the ADC’s failure to address power rotation and zoning during the recent opposition summit in Ibadan.
