Peter Obi, Labour Party’s flag-bearer in the last presidential vote, has restated his plan to run in the 2027 race.
Obi made the remark while drumming up support for the African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate ahead of the Abuja Municipal Area Council election.
“Support us in AMAC in this coming poll; it’ll help me,” he told the crowd. “I’m in this contest to be number one. When I’m back, you’ll see. I promise—this time, I’m running.”
Since joining the ADC, Obi’s supporters—many from the Obidient movement—have pressed the party to put him atop the presidential ticket. National publicity secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, however, has warned members to cool their rhetoric and keep the party united.
Talk of an Obi–Rabiu Kwankwaso ticket on the ADC platform has also resurfaced; Kwankwaso’s refusal to join the APC is fuelling the buzz. Backers of former vice-president Atiku Abubakar, meanwhile, have revived calls for Obi to take a running-mate slot as he did in 2019. Obi waved the idea off, telling his supporters that he plans to lead the ballot in 2027.
Obi has repeatedly said that, if elected, he won’t spend “a day beyond four years” in office.
