The 2023 Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu, alleging that his administration is further entrenching Nigeria and its citizens in poverty while disseminating inaccurate economic data.
In a statement posted on his X page on Monday, Peter Obi asserted that under President Tinubu’s leadership, Nigeria has become one of the world’s hungriest nations.
Obi recalled how, during the 2023 election campaign in November 2022, then-APC presidential candidate Bola Tinubu had “berated the other Presidential Candidate (Peter Obi),” scoffing at his use of statistics by saying, “Na statistics we go chop all I want is to put food on the table of Nigerians.”
However, Obi now contends that President Tinubu, having assumed power, is “circulating false figures regarding Nigeria’s economic status in order to hide his failings as President.”
He further stated: “Now 2 years into his 4-year tenure, Nigeria is classified as one of the hungriest nations in the world with millions of Nigerians not knowing where their next meal will come from.” (Note: Nigeria ranks 110th out of 127 countries in the 2024 Global Hunger Index, indicating a “serious” level of hunger.)
Obi elaborated, “President Tinubu is now overfeeding Nigerians with wrong Statistics from wrong unemployment figures, wrong inflation figures, and now GDP debasing, all to put a positive spin on our deteriorating economic and household conditions.”
He concluded by emphasizing the seriousness of governance: “Governance is not a rock science, it’s not a gamble, like I have always reiterated, it requires sincerity of purpose, character, competence, capacity and compassion.”
