The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has handed the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) an unexpected defeat in Jigawa State, securing victory in the polling unit of the Minister of Defence, Alhaji Muhammad Badaru Abubakar.
At polling unit 001, Babura Kofar Arewa Primary School, the PDP recorded 308 votes against APC’s 112 in the by-election for the Garki–Babura Federal Constituency.
Badaru, a former governor of Jigawa and a key APC figure, cast his ballot under heavy security but declined to address journalists after the outcome.
Speaking after the results were announced, a jubilant PDP supporter in Babura said, “This is proof that the people are ready for change, even in the strongholds of the ruling party.”
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) confirmed that Saturday’s exercise was part of nationwide re-run and by-elections conducted across at least 12 states. Reports from various locations revealed a mix of voter apathy, isolated violence, and allegations of vote buying.
