Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has defended the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) decision to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to the South, describing it as a step to strengthen unity and stability within the party.

The party’s National Executive Committee (NEC) reached the resolution on Monday at its Abuja meeting, which also confirmed Iliya Damagum as the substantive national chairman.

Speaking on AIT on Tuesday, Mohammed said the zoning move was part of a deliberate strategy to reposition the PDP ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“I am very satisfied with the resolution because I’m part and parcel of it — from the arrangement, strategy, and delivery. It is an all-inclusive decision to sustain the zoning formula and to zone the presidential office to the South so we can have some sanity, understanding, and unity,” he said.

The governor urged politicians and Nigerians at large to place national interest above personal ambition. He stressed that politics should be guided by sacrifice, collective progress and respect for party decisions.

“Politics is not about self-interest. It is about actualisation within the framework of party decisions and national progress. Everything is predicated on sacrifice, not selfishness. We must live and let live, and remember that power comes from God,” he added.

Mohammed also assured that PDP governors, the National Working Committee and the Board of Trustees remain united in rebuilding the party as a credible alternative for Nigerians in 2027.
