At least two civilians have been reported killed and several others injured after a military helicopter opened fire on a community in Niger State, sparking outrage and fresh concerns over civilian safety during security operations.

The incident occurred on January 25 in Kurgi, a community in Mashegu Local Government Area of the state. Local accounts said the victims included women and children, with several residents sustaining injuries during the operation.

A security report by Aldebaran Threat Consultants stated that the helicopter was seen hovering over the area before shots were fired, triggering panic among villagers.

The air operation is believed to be part of a broader wave of military actions launched around January 20 across parts of Niger and neighbouring Kwara State. The operations were reportedly initiated in response to a recent surge in criminal activity and terrorist attacks in northern parts of the region.

While security forces have intensified operations to curb banditry and insurgency, the incident has raised renewed questions about intelligence gathering, rules of engagement and the protection of civilians during counter-terrorism missions.

As of the time of filing this report, there has been no official statement from the military authorities on the incident. Community leaders and rights advocates are calling for an urgent investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and to ensure accountability.
