The Special Adviser to President Bola Tinubu on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, has condemned Aloy Ejimakor, one of the lawyers representing detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, for taking part in a protest demanding his client’s release.

Onanuga expressed his displeasure in a statement posted on his X handle on Monday, describing Ejimakor’s involvement in the demonstration organised by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore as inappropriate and unprofessional.

“I spotted Aloy Ejimakor, one of Nnamdi Kanu’s lawyers, amongst the small group of protesters mobilised in Abuja by Omoyele Sowore. I wonder what Mr Ejimakor was thinking when he decided to join this shambolic protest,” Onanuga wrote.

The presidential aide argued that Ejimakor’s participation in the public demonstration violated the sub judice principle, which restricts public commentary on matters pending before the court.

He noted that as lead counsel in Kanu’s ongoing treason trial, the lawyer should understand the legal implications of his actions.

“As a lawyer, he should be aware of the principle of sub judice, particularly in relation to the ongoing treason case before the court. The prosecution has concluded its case, and it is now incumbent upon Mr Ejimakor and the other lawyers to mount a strong defence for Kanu,” Onanuga stated.

The presidential spokesman accused Ejimakor of resorting to what he termed “extra-legal tactics” rather than focusing on building a solid defence for his client in court.

“Rather than focusing on preparing a strong case, Mr Ejimakor has resorted to extra-legal tactics, joining a career anarchist to influence the process,” he added.

Onanuga called on relevant legal authorities to investigate Ejimakor’s conduct and consider imposing sanctions for what he described as unethical behaviour.

“Ejimakor’s action questions his adherence to professional ethics. Legal authorities should consider appropriate sanctions for the unethical conduct of the bearded lawyer,” he said.

The #FreeNnamdiKanu protest, which began around 7am near the Transcorp Hilton Hotel in Abuja, was dispersed by security operatives who fired tear gas canisters at demonstrators, including Sowore.

Kanu, who has been in detention since June 2021 following his extradition from Kenya, is facing charges of treasonable felony and terrorism before a Federal High Court in Abuja.

His supporters and legal team have repeatedly called for his release, arguing that his continued detention violates court orders and international human rights standards.
