Presidential spokesperson Daniel Bwala has dismissed suggestions that remarks made by Cardinal John Onaiyekan following a recent meeting between President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and a delegation of bishops represented the position of the entire Christian community in Nigeria.
Bwala clarified that Cardinal Onaiyekan, a prominent figure in the Catholic Church, spoke solely on behalf of the Catholic faithful and should not be regarded as speaking for all Christians across the country.
His comments come amid widespread public discussion over the outcome of the meeting between President Tinubu and Christian religious leaders, with various interpretations emerging regarding the position of the Christian community on national issues.
According to Bwala, Nigeria’s Christian population is made up of several denominations, each with its own leadership and organisational structure. He stressed that it would be inaccurate to generalise the views expressed by a Catholic cleric as the collective stance of all Christians.
The presidential aide maintained that the Tinubu administration remains committed to engaging religious leaders across different faiths and denominations as part of efforts to foster national unity, strengthen dialogue, and promote peaceful coexistence.
