Senator Iyiola Omisore, a prominent figure in the All Progressives Congress (APC), has officially announced his intention to contest the 2026 governorship election in Osun State.

The former deputy governor of Osun, who has a long history in the state’s political landscape, made the announcement on his X handle, stating that he will hold a formal declaration event on Tuesday, October 7, 2025, at the Osun APC Secretariat in Ogo-Oluwa, Osogbo.

In a post on his social media account, Omisore shared his thoughts with the people of Osun State, saying, “My beloved people of Osun State, after deep reflection and wide consultations, I have decided to formally declare my intention to contest for the Governor of Osun State in 2026 under our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC).”

Omisore, who has been a key player in Osun politics for decades, is expected to be a leading candidate for the APC governorship ticket. His campaign, themed “Fix the Broken, Restore Our Dreams”, is set to focus on rebuilding the state, restoring hope, and strengthening governance. The announcement has stirred excitement among supporters, with Omisore stressing that his mission is one that involves the collective effort of the people of Osun.

“This is not just my mission, it is a collective one. I humbly invite you to join me as we take this bold step towards the Osun Rescue Mission 2026,” Omisore wrote, inviting both his supporters and all residents of the state to unite for the betterment of the region.

Omisore’s political journey has been a dynamic one. He first served as deputy governor of Osun from 1999 to 2003 under the Alliance for Democracy (AD) before transitioning to the Senate, where he represented Osun East from 2003 to 2011. During his time in the National Assembly, he served as the chairman of the Senate Appropriations Committee.

His foray into the governorship race began in 2014 when he contested the election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but lost to the then-incumbent governor, Rauf Aregbesola. After a brief affiliation with the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Omisore made the pivotal move to the APC in 2021, quickly rising through the ranks to become the party’s National Secretary.

The upcoming governorship election in Osun is expected to be highly competitive, with Omisore now emerging as one of the leading contenders for the APC ticket. His supporters believe that his experience and track record will position him as a formidable candidate in the race.
