The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has publicly distanced itself from a circulating social media post which claimed the group had asked Peter Obi to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race and warned the North not to support his candidacy.

Dr Ezechi Chukwu, the group’s National Publicity Secretary, released a statement on Tuesday making it clear that the claim was false and had nothing to do with the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation.

“That misleading statement did not come from Ohanaeze Ndigbo,” Chukwu said. “It’s the work of political mischief-makers trying to stir division and confusion.”

He stressed that the current leadership under President-General Senator John Azuta Mbata, alongside Prince Okey Nwadinobi and Emeka Sibeudu, would never issue such a “reckless and dishonourable” comment.

Chukwu reaffirmed the group’s focus on unity and national development.

“Our priority remains the wellbeing of the Igbo nation and Nigeria at large. We operate based on justice, fairness, and equity,” he said. “Ohanaeze is non-partisan. We’ve not endorsed any presidential candidate, and we’ve not taken any stance on the 2027 elections.”

He warned politicians and media platforms to stop dragging Ohanaeze into political propaganda and to verify information before spreading it.
