United States Senator Ted Cruz has alleged that Nigerian government officials are complicit in attacks against Christians in the country, raising fresh concerns over religious violence and accountability.
In remarks that have drawn international attention, Cruz claimed that elements within Nigeria’s leadership structure are involved in or turning a blind eye to the killings. He did not publicly present detailed evidence to support the allegation.
The accusation adds to longstanding concerns by international observers over sectarian violence in parts of Nigeria, where clashes involving armed groups, bandits and extremist factions have disproportionately affected civilian populations, including Christian communities.
Nigerian authorities have consistently denied claims of religious bias in their security operations, maintaining that the violence is driven by complex factors such as insurgency, criminality and communal disputes rather than state-sponsored targeting.
