Controversial cleric Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popularly known as Odumeje, has criticised the Federal Government and Nigerians over celebrations surrounding the rehabilitation of a bridge reportedly built in 1950.

Odumeje expressed his displeasure in a statement circulating on social media, questioning why the rehabilitation of an old bridge was being celebrated as though a new structure had been constructed.

In a post shared on X by a user identified as Chuks Eric, the cleric likened the development to repainting a car that had been parked for more than 50 years and celebrating the exercise as a major achievement.

“These people don’t have conscience,” he was quoted as saying.

He added: “Imagine repainting a car you parked for over 50 years and you start celebrating everywhere.”

His comments have drawn attention to questions about infrastructure development, public spending and the standards Nigerians should expect from government projects.

While rehabilitation and maintenance are important for extending the lifespan of public infrastructure, Odumeje’s remarks highlight concerns about the distinction between maintaining existing facilities and delivering new projects.

However, details of the specific bridge, the scope of its rehabilitation and the Federal Government’s position on the criticism were not immediately available.

The comments come amid continuing public discussions about infrastructure development and the delivery of government projects across Nigeria.
