The Obidient Movement has vehemently refuted claims that its leader, Peter Obi, has been offered the running mate position to Atiku Abubakar in a potential 2027 political alliance. In a strongly worded statement, the group dismissed the reports as “entirely false and speculative.”
The denial comes amidst swirling rumors that Atiku had proposed a one-term presidency, paving the way for Obi to contest in 2031. However, the Obidient Movement, through its Director of Strategic Communication and Media, Nana Kazaure, clarified that while coalition talks are ongoing, they are centered on governance reforms and national progress.
“The Obidient Movement has been inundated with calls regarding a media publication claiming that our principal, Peter Obi, has been offered a running mate position to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Even though the publication is imaginary to the author, we find it appropriate to react,” the statement read.
Kazaure emphasized that Obi’s primary focus remains on addressing critical national issues such as corruption, poverty, and poor healthcare. “Mr Obi has maintained that his objective and his involvement in a coalition are to provide a united front against, and to tackle, issues of bad governance, corruption, hunger, poverty, poor healthcare, out-of-school children, and the myriad of other problems daily afflicting the people of Nigeria.”
The movement also reaffirmed Obi’s continued membership in the Labour Party, stating, “At this point in time, Mr Peter Obi remains in the Labour Party, and if ever this changes, he will make that announcement himself.”
The group urged the media to exercise restraint and responsibility in their reporting, calling for a focus on national development rather than sensationalism. “We want politics that is progressive, standing firmly with the people and serving the great people of Nigeria — and not politics just for the sake of grabbing power,” the statement concluded.
