Peter Obi, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, has decried the persistent killings of security operatives across Nigeria, warning that governance cannot succeed without prioritising national security.

In a statement shared on his X handle on Tuesday, the former Anambra State governor lamented the deaths of soldiers, police officers, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) operatives, and vigilante members in the line of duty.

“These recurring killings should serve as a wake-up call to us leaders to better equip and motivate our security operatives. Security must now become the foundation of governance,” Obi said.

He stressed that families of fallen officers deserve full compensation and lasting support, describing such measures not as charity but as justice for those who laid down their lives.

“Our government must ensure that the wives, children, and parents of these heroes are fairly compensated and supported. That is the least a grateful nation can provide,” he added.

Paying tribute to the deceased, Obi hailed them as gallant men and women whose patriotism and sacrifice would never be forgotten.
