Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has warned that democracy in Nigeria is losing its essence, no longer serving the needs of the people but rather fuelling elite capture of state resources.
Speaking at the 2025 International Conference organised by the Goodluck Jonathan Foundation in Accra on Wednesday, Obi said Nigeria exemplifies a democracy in decline, where political leaders prioritise personal and family interests over public welfare.
“Democracy dies when it ceases to be accountable to the people and fails to address their needs,” he said, stressing that genuine democracy must guarantee security, education, healthcare and poverty reduction.
Obi urged Nigerians to take elections seriously by voting for leaders with competence, character, compassion, and commitment to public service, arguing this was the only way to reverse the decline.
