Iyabo Obasanjo has announced the suspension of her bid to contest the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State, in a move that has stirred political conversations across the state.
In a statement released on Monday, the former senator said her decision followed “careful reflection and consultation,” though she did not disclose specific reasons for stepping back from the race.
Iyabo, the daughter of former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo, had been considered a notable contender in the build-up to the 2027 elections, drawing attention due to her political pedigree and prior experience in public office.
While acknowledging the support she has received from political allies and constituents, she emphasised that her decision was taken in the best interest of her personal convictions and the broader political landscape.
“I remain committed to the progress and development of Ogun State and will continue to contribute in other meaningful ways,” the statement read.
The announcement comes amid early political manoeuvring ahead of the 2027 election cycle, with parties and aspirants beginning to position themselves in what is expected to be a highly competitive race.
Iyabo’s withdrawal leaves a gap in the emerging field of aspirants, potentially reshaping alliances and calculations among key political actors in the state.
