Nigeria’s Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has delivered a scathing reflection on the opposition’s 2022 presidential primaries, declaring the event the moment the Peoples Democratic Party began its political decline.

Speaking on the fallout from the party’s internal contest, Wike said the gathering that produced former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar as candidate symbolised the “foundation for the burial” of the PDP.

The primaries brought together several influential figures, including former Senate President David Mark and former Sokoto State Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, whose roles in the process have continued to fuel debate within Nigeria’s political landscape.

Wike’s remarks underscore lingering divisions within the PDP, years after the contest exposed deep rifts over power-sharing, zoning, and the party’s leadership direction. Analysts say the comments highlight how unresolved tensions from the primaries still shape opposition politics ahead of future elections.
