Nigeria’s National Orientation Agency (NOA) has commended the Imo State Government for banning extravagant graduation parties in nursery, primary and junior secondary schools.

The Agency described the measure as timely, warning that lavish celebrations erode values of hard work and discipline among children. It said such practices also place avoidable financial pressure on parents.

NOA Director General Lanre Issa-Onilu,in a statement signed by its Director Communication and Media Bala Musa on Monday, explained that the culture of excessive school parties fosters unrealistic expectations of instant reward and undermines modest upbringing.

He said the new policy aligns with the agency’s ongoing campaign against extreme “sign-out” celebrations.

He further welcomed Imo’s directive stopping schools from changing textbooks annually, noting that it will reduce costs for families and improve access to education.

According to the DG, the restriction of graduation ceremonies to Primary 6 and Senior Secondary 3 classes reflects Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education model, ensuring national standards are upheld.

Issa-Onilu urged other state governments to adopt similar reforms, arguing that such policies would build a more disciplined, value-driven education system.

He added that the partnership between NOA, state governments, schools and parents is key to reshaping attitudes and instilling modesty in young learners.
