Alhaji Tanko Yakasai, a prominent elder statesman, has asserted that no candidate will be able to defeat President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the upcoming 2027 presidential elections. Yakasai shared his views during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Sunday.

His sentiments echoed those of Deputy Senate President Barau I. Jibrin, who noted that the increasing defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) suggest that Tinubu is well-positioned for a seamless re-election.

In his interview, Yakasai, a key member of the Arewa Consultative Forum, stated that he was unaware of any collective decision from the northern political group endorsing a candidate for the 2027 elections. “I haven’t heard anyone propose a candidate for the 2027 presidential election from the Arewa Consultative Forum,” he remarked. “What is being referred to as the position of the Arewa Consultative Forum or Northern Elders Forum is merely individual opinions, as no consensus has been reached.”

Yakasai emphasized the need for Nigerians to wait for an official stance from northern leaders. “Currently, Bola Tinubu is the president, supported by his ministers and governors. Who else possesses the stamina and strength to challenge him effectively?” he questioned.

He pointed out that the ruling APC controls a majority of states and that some opposition governors are also backing Tinubu. “Unless there is a drastic change, the odds remain in his favor. He has not acted against the north, and the north alone cannot determine who becomes president,” Yakasai added.

He also highlighted the internal crises within major opposition parties as further factors that could facilitate Tinubu’s victory in 2027. While Yakasai refrained from assessing the administration’s performance over the past two years, he urged politicians to prioritize the interests of the masses in their actions and strategies.

“Our politicians should view politics as a dynamic game, focusing on ideology and programs rather than merely seeking positions of power,” he advised. “If leaders prioritize their own ambitions over the country’s welfare, we will not progress. It is vital to move beyond ethnic and religious politics, which have hindered us for too long.”

On a personal note, Yakasai, who is set to celebrate his 100th birthday in December, attributed his longevity to divine grace and family history, noting that both his parents lived to advanced ages. “I give glory to God for my children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, who now number over 80,” he said.

Deputy Senate President Jibrin’s Remarks

At a recent APC North West Stakeholders meeting in Kaduna, Deputy Senate President Jibrin echoed Yakasai’s sentiments, calling for unity among party members to ensure the success of the Tinubu administration. “In 2027, we are poised for a landslide victory, in sha Allah. Let us continue to cooperate and support one another,” he stated.

Jibrin attributed the recent influx of opposition members into the APC to President Tinubu’s performance in addressing the country’s challenges. He highlighted improvements in security and accessibility in previously troubled areas, stating, “While we are not where we want to be, progress is being made.”

Governor Uba Sani’s Support

Kaduna State Governor Uba Sani also expressed his support for the Tinubu administration, stating that the North West zone is faring better under his leadership. He praised Tinubu for taking decisive actions during a challenging period in the nation’s history, noting that the region has seen significant improvements in security and agriculture.

Sani emphasized the importance of consolidating gains and mobilizing support for President Tinubu’s re-election, stating, “We have in Mr. President a true father and friend. Let us rally our people to support him for a second term as he works to reinvent our economy and eradicate hunger and poverty.”
