Senate Minority Leader Abba Moro has dismissed widespread rumours suggesting he is planning to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing the claims as “false, mischievous, and politically motivated.”
Speaking through his media office on Tuesday, Moro said he remains committed to strengthening the opposition in the Senate and has no intention of abandoning the party that, he said, “has given me the platform to serve and defend Nigeria’s democracy.”
The rumour, which circulated across social media platforms and some online blogs, alleged that the Benue South senator was in talks with leaders of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of a possible switch. Moro said the reports were part of a “deliberate campaign to create confusion within the opposition and distract from the real issues affecting Nigerians.”
He added that the PDP leadership in the Senate remains “strong, united, and focused on holding the government accountable,” urging party supporters to disregard what he described as “cheap political blackmail.”
Political analysts say rumours of high-profile defections typically intensify ahead of major political cycles, but many noted there has been no visible rift between Moro and the PDP leadership.
For now, the Senate Minority Leader insists he is staying put — and wants the public to “treat the rumour with the contempt it deserves.”
