The Nigerian government has unveiled a revamped school curriculum set to launch in September 2025, focusing on digital literacy, artificial intelligence (AI), and entrepreneurship to prepare students for the future.
Dada Olusegun, Special Assistant to the President on Social Media, shared the full list of subjects on his X platform, announcing that the updated curriculum would help equip young Nigerians with the necessary skills for a rapidly changing world. “The new curriculum aims to prepare our youth for the challenges of the 21st century, incorporating essential skills like digital literacy and entrepreneurship from Junior Secondary School onwards,” he said.
In Junior Secondary School (JSS 1–3), traditional subjects such as Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and Language remain central, but with an added emphasis on modern subjects like Python programming, robotics, and the use of digital tools such as Word and Excel. Basic entrepreneurship will also be taught, fostering an early understanding of business and financial literacy. This shift is intended to lay a solid foundation for future academic and career success, focusing on skills that are critical for the modern job market.
Senior Secondary School (SSS 1–3) students will experience an even deeper dive into advanced technology with subjects like programming, AI, cybersecurity, data science, and digital entrepreneurship. “We want to prepare our students not just for exams but for real-world opportunities,” noted educational experts upon the release of the curriculum. This focus on high-demand skills aims to produce a generation ready to lead in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
The new curriculum ensures a holistic education by including subjects that focus on communication, research skills, and creative arts. Critical thinking and problem-solving are key components, encouraging students to think independently and adapt to complex situations. Additionally, physical and mental health education will be strengthened, promoting well-rounded development. Leadership training and first aid skills will be incorporated, preparing students to take on leadership roles in the future.
In a significant move, Senior Secondary students will engage in a final-year project, designed to give them practical experience in research, data analysis, and presentation. This project aims to prepare students for higher education and entrepreneurial ventures, giving them a competitive edge in the global workforce.
