The Nigerian House of Representatives has announced an emergency sitting on Tuesday, 17 February 2026, to address the recently released timetable for the 2027 general elections by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
In a statement, House Spokesman Rep. Akin Rotimi described the announcement as having “constitutional and national significance,” noting that INEC has set 20 February 2027 for the presidential and National Assembly elections.
Members were notified through an internal memorandum from the Speaker’s office, with deliberations expected to focus on legislative measures concerning the election timetable. Rep. Rotimi urged all lawmakers to prioritise attendance, highlighting the session’s importance to Nigeria’s democratic process.
The emergency sitting follows INEC’s formal unveiling of the full 2027 election schedule, which also includes timelines for party primaries between July and September 2026 and the commencement of continuous voter registration in April 2026.
This development comes amid ongoing discussions over possible amendments to the Electoral Act ahead of the polls, signalling a proactive stance by the House in addressing critical electoral matters.
