The Nigerian Army has successfully reclaimed the notorious Sambisa Forest, a longtime stronghold of extremist groups, in a meticulously executed offensive operation. The breakthrough, part of the ongoing ‘Operation Hadin Kai’ signals a significant turning point in the nation’s fight against insurgency.

The operation, codenamed “Operation Desert Sanity V” was carried out on the morning of December 30 by combined troops of the 21 Special Armoured Brigade and the 26 Task Force Brigade, alongside volunteer forces. Advancing from the Harbour area, the troops targeted and cleared key terrorist enclaves in the Ukuba axis, Parisu, Somalia Camp, and Njimiya.

Military sources confirmed that although terrorists had fled the area—likely due to earlier airstrikes—the troops successfully destroyed multiple active camps and critical life-support infrastructure, dealing a severe blow to the operational capabilities of the insurgents.

Among the recoveries made were an 81mm mortar base plate and a hand grenade, underscoring the intensity of the terrorists’ presence in the region. The impact of prior aerial bombardments was also visibly confirmed during the operation.

Defence analysts have hailed the success as a testament to the improved coordination, intelligence gathering, and sustained pressure applied by the military in recent months. “This isn’t just a tactical victory; it’s a strategic one,” said security expert Dr. Abubakar Musa. “Sambisa’s liberation disrupts the terrorists’ logistics, morale, and territorial control.”

Residents in nearby communities expressed relief and optimism, with many hoping the success will pave the way for displaced families to return home.

As mopping-up operations continue, the military has assured the public that stability and normalcy remain top priorities.
