The Nigerian Army says a U.S.-led air raid has smashed militant camps hidden in Lakurawa, Tangaza Local Government Area, Sokoto State.

Acting director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele, announced on Monday that the strike was part of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, handled by the 8 Division/Sector 2 Combined Joint Task Force.

Combat Intelligence Battalion VII, acting on a tip-off about fighters moving near Kaurau, teamed up with U.S. AFRICOM to hit the Bauni Forest camps close to Waria and Alkassim villages on 25 December, Anele said.

A follow-up patrol the next day found the sites flattened. “The destruction has seriously weakened the terrorists’ ability to operate,” she added.

Elsewhere, troops from 1 Brigade, Combat Team 12, stationed at Forward Operating Base Jabo, Kebbi State, swept Kajiji Town in Tambuwal LGA and picked up wreckage thought to be pieces of drones and missiles.

Army engineers say one chunk is a 300-kg Tomahawk fuel booster that can burrow two metres into soft ground.

Anele urged anyone who spots strange metal to flag it to the nearest security unit, promising that engineers are still scouring the area for leftover parts.

The Army pledged to keep the pressure on terror groups and protect lives and property across northern Nigeria.
