The Nigerian Armed Forces have made remarkable strides in safeguarding the nation, neutralizing key threats, and restoring safety across conflict-affected regions. The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has reported substantial progress in the fight against terrorism, insurgency, and organized crime, underscoring the military’s unwavering commitment to protecting citizens and strengthening national unity.
Decisive Actions Against Terrorism
Under the strategic guidance of the Defence Headquarters, Nigerian troops executed precision operations leading to the elimination of several high-profile terrorist commanders, including notorious figures such as Aminu Kanawa, Dan Bokolo, Bello Buba, and Halilu Sabubu. These successes have severely degraded the operational capabilities of extremist groups, allowing for the gradual return of peace and normalcy in affected areas.
Throughout 2025, security forces arrested 4,375 suspects involved in acts of terrorism, banditry, and kidnapping, while 1,616 individuals and their family members chose the path of peace by voluntarily surrendering. In a heartening development, 2,336 kidnapped hostages were safely rescued and reunited with their families.
Regional Gains and Collaborative Success
In the North East, troops of Operation Hadin Kai neutralized key threats, apprehended 1,323 suspects, and facilitated the surrender of 1,616 individuals. The region also witnessed the rescue of 498 hostages and the recovery of significant assets, including arms, vehicles, and ₦32 million in illicit funds. These efforts have enabled the restoration of local governance, economic activities, and the return of displaced persons to their communities.
In the North West, Operation Fansan Yamma achieved major victories with the precise targeting of terrorist enclaves, leading to the arrest of 669 suspects and the rescue of 966 hostages. The use of advanced technology, including MQ-9 Reaper drones, allowed for surgical strikes against ISIS-affiliated groups in the Bauni Forest, Sokoto State, with careful measures ensuring zero civilian casualties.
The North Central Zone also saw notable improvements, with troops of Operation Enduring Peace and Operation Whirl Stroke neutralizing threats, arresting a combined total of 1,281 suspects, and rescuing 755 hostages. Recoveries of arms and ammunition further weakened criminal networks operating in the region.
Commitment to Human Security and Development
The Nigerian military remains dedicated not only to security but also to the well-being and development of all citizens. In a clear demonstration of this commitment, the Army has clarified recent reports regarding infrastructure projects in the South East, emphasizing that the facilities under development are training centers aimed at enhancing operational readiness—not settlements as mistakenly speculated.
These initiatives are part of a broader strategy to build trust, foster community engagement, and promote national unity. The Armed Forces continue to work closely with strategic partners, civil authorities, and local communities to ensure a holistic approach to security and development.
A Call for Continued Vigilance and Support
As the nation moves forward, the Defence Headquarters has reaffirmed its resolve to protect every Nigerian and secure the country’s borders. Citizens are encouraged to remain vigilant and supportive, as collective efforts remain essential to sustaining these gains and achieving lasting peace.
The achievements of 2025 stand as a testament to the bravery, professionalism, and dedication of Nigeria’s servicemen and women. With continued collaboration and determination, the nation is poised to build a safer, more prosperous future for all.
