Elder statesman and former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chief Bode George, has declared that Nigeria’s persistent governance and development setbacks are driven by what he described as “two major evils”.

Speaking in an interview reported by Politics Nigeria, George said the country’s lingering challenges stem from entrenched corruption and pervasive ethnic divisions, which he argued have continued to undermine national cohesion and effective leadership.

According to him, corruption has weakened institutions, crippled public trust, and diverted resources meant for national development, while ethnic bias has fuelled unhealthy rivalries and hindered merit-based appointments and policymaking.

George stressed that unless these two problems are decisively addressed, Nigeria will continue to struggle with insecurity, economic stagnation, and political instability. He urged leaders across political lines to pursue genuine reforms, strengthen accountability systems, and prioritise national unity over personal or sectional interests.

He added that rebuilding public confidence in governance is essential if Nigeria is to realise its full potential.
