Nigeria’s police authorities have suspended the nationwide enforcement of tinted glass permits following a restraining order issued by a Federal High Court, pending a full hearing scheduled for 20 January.

The decision was announced after the court directed the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) to stop all enforcement activities related to vehicle tinted permits until legal arguments on the matter are heard.

In a brief statement on Tuesday, police officials said the Force would comply fully with the court’s directive, stressing that no officer is authorised to demand or enforce tinted glass permits during the subsisting order.

“The Nigeria Police Force hereby suspends the enforcement of tinted glass permit requirements nationwide in obedience to a Federal High Court order. All officers are to comply with this directive until the next hearing date of 20 January,” the statement read.

The case challenging the legality and procedure of tinted glass permit enforcement was filed by concerned citizens who argued that motorists were being subjected to arbitrary stops and extortion under the guise of checking permits.

The police have faced sustained public criticism over the practice, with many motorists alleging widespread harassment at checkpoints.

Legal analysts say the upcoming hearing will determine whether the existing regulatory framework for tinted glass permits aligns with constitutional protections and policing standards.

For now, authorities have urged the public to remain law-abiding while assuring that compliance with the court’s directive will be monitored across all commands and formations.
