Nigeria Eyes Massive Drone Arsenal in Shift to Precision Warfare

The Nigerian military is preparing to acquire hundreds of thousands of loitering munitions in what analysts describe as a major strategic shift toward precision-based warfare aimed at crushing insurgent groups and armed bandits.

Military officials say the planned procurement reflects a growing emphasis on “precision mass” technology — a battlefield approach that combines large-scale deployment of smart weapons with targeted strikes designed to minimise troop exposure and improve operational efficiency.

Loitering munitions, often described as “kamikaze drones”, are capable of hovering over targets before striking with high precision, making them increasingly valuable in modern counterinsurgency campaigns.

The move comes as Nigeria continues to battle multiple security threats, including armed groups operating across the country’s northeast and northwest regions. Security experts believe the adoption of advanced drone systems could significantly alter the military’s operational capabilities in difficult terrains where conventional warfare has yielded limited success.

Officials have not publicly disclosed the timeline, cost, or foreign partners involved in the proposed acquisition. However, defence insiders say the initiative signals Nigeria’s intention to modernise its military doctrine and align with evolving global trends in drone warfare.

The planned expansion of drone capabilities also underscores growing concerns over the adaptability of insurgent networks, which have increasingly relied on mobility and asymmetric tactics to evade conventional military offensives.
