Nigeria stamped its authority at the 2025 CAA Region 2 Athletics Championships in Accra, delivering an exceptional performance that saw the team sweep all the gold medals on offer. Team Nigeria’s display of speed and stamina across sprints and relays left no doubt about their position as West Africa’s premier athletics powerhouse.
Chioma Cynthia Nweke set the pace on opening day, claiming the women’s 100m title in 11.62 seconds before leading Nigeria’s 4x100m relay squad to victory alongside Iyanuoluwa Bada, Maria Thompson and Olayinka Olajide, finishing strongly in 44.92 seconds. The men’s 4x100m team, featuring Chidera Ezeakor, Gafar Audu, James Taiwo Emmanuel and anchor Olaolu Jason Olatunde, matched this brilliance by edging rivals Ghana with a season-best 39.74 seconds.
Success extended to the 4x400m relays where Nigeria excelled again. The women’s team of Favour Onyah, Patience Okon George, Anita Enaruna and Maria Thompson stormed to gold in 3:33.83, while the men’s quartet of Victor Sampson, Ezekiel Asuquo, David Akhalu and Gafari Badmus sealed victory with 3:05.22.
Individual performances were equally impressive. Anita Itohan Enaruna smashed her personal best to win the women’s 200m in 23.91 seconds, closely followed by teammate Maria Thompson. Olaolu Jason Olatunde powered to glory in the men’s 100m sprints with 10.60 seconds, narrowly outpacing Ghana’s Kevin Arthur.
Gafari Badmus further asserted Nigerian dominance by clocking a lifetime best of 45.53 seconds to win the men’s 400m, with fellow Nigerian Ezekiel Eno Asuquo taking silver. Chidera Ezeakor dazzled over the men’s 200m distance, crossing the line in 20.77 seconds to deny Ghana the home win.
“This championship showcased Nigeria’s strength and unity in athletics,” said a team source. “Our athletes fought with determination and represented the green and white with pride.”
From relays to individual events, Nigeria’s sweeping success in Accra underlines its growing prominence in continental athletics and sends a powerful message ahead of upcoming international competitions.
