The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has lent its financial support for the final funeral rites of two iconic figures in Nigerian football—former captains Christian “Chairman” Chukwu and Peter “Dodo Mayana” Rufai.

Christian Chukwu, who led the Super Eagles to victory in the 1980 Africa Cup of Nations, passed away in Enugu on April 12, 2025. His funeral rites culminated in a week-long celebration of his life, with his final interment taking place in his hometown of Obe on Saturday. The NFF, led by Chief George Aluo, the Chairman of the Nigeria National League, attended the ceremony in place of NFF President Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau. Alongside Aluo were Barr. Okey Obi, the Federation’s Director of Legal Services, and Chikelue Iloenyosi, the Chairman of the Anambra State Football Association.

During the ceremony, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State announced that the legendary No. 5 jersey worn by Chukwu throughout his illustrious career with Enugu Rangers would be retired. The Enugu State Government has also vowed to collaborate with the Federal Government and the NFF to immortalise Chukwu’s legacy. “Meeting Chairman was always an inspiring experience due to his simplicity and humility,” said Governor Mbah.

As the nation continues to mourn, Peter Rufai, who captained Nigeria to its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance in 1994, will be laid to rest in Lagos this Friday. Rufai’s wake-keep will be held at his residence in Amuwo-Odofin on Thursday evening, followed by a funeral mass at the Catholic Church of Visitation in Festac Town. Rufai’s remarkable career includes winning a gold medal and two silver medals from three Africa Cup of Nations participations.
