President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally inaugurated Olatunji Disu as Nigeria’s new Inspector-General of Police, charging him to strengthen internal security and restore public confidence in law enforcement.
The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Council Chambers of the State House in Abuja on Tuesday, attended by senior government officials, security chiefs and members of the Federal Executive Council.
In his remarks, Tinubu urged the new police chief to prioritise professionalism, intelligence-led policing and respect for human rights, as Nigeria grapples with insecurity ranging from banditry and kidnapping to communal violence and cybercrime.
“The safety of Nigerians remains the foremost responsibility of government,” the president said, emphasising the need for synergy among security agencies to confront evolving threats.
Disu, a career police officer with decades of service, pledged to reposition the Nigeria Police Force through reforms aimed at operational efficiency, discipline and enhanced community engagement. He also promised to strengthen collaboration with other security services to tackle organised crime and terrorism.
Security analysts say the appointment comes at a critical time, with public scrutiny on policing standards and accountability growing amid calls for reform. Observers note that the new Inspector-General’s tenure will likely be measured by his ability to modernise the force, improve intelligence gathering and address concerns over misconduct.
Nigeria’s police leadership has undergone several transitions in recent years, reflecting broader efforts to stabilise the country’s internal security architecture.
The presidency said the appointment takes immediate effect, signalling what officials describe as a renewed push to consolidate security gains and rebuild trust between law enforcement and citizens.
