Super Eagles striker Victor Boniface faces a reduced role at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen under new coach Erik Ten Hag, according to recent reports from Germany. The 24-year-old Nigerian, who joined the club in 2023 and has been a reliable goalscorer, is now reportedly the third-choice striker behind Patrik Schick and new signing Christian Michel Kofane.

Since Ten Hag took over as head coach a few months ago, Boniface has seen limited game time, including starting the season on the bench during the recent DFB Pokal match against Grossaspach. When Schick was substituted in that fixture, it was Kofane who was brought on instead of Boniface. This move highlighted Ten Hag’s preference for Schick and Kofane in his attacking setup.

German media outlet Bild reported that Ten Hag’s decision reflects Boniface’s current level of match fitness, as the coach acknowledged before the Grossaspach game: “He is not yet where he should be in terms of fitness.” Boniface has battled injury setbacks in recent seasons, which have affected his ability to consistently hold a starting spot.

Boniface transferred from Belgian club Royale Union SG and has made a significant impact at Bayer Leverkusen with 32 goals and 13 assists in 61 appearances. However, with the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations scheduled for December, the striker faces pressure to regain full fitness and secure regular playing minutes to maintain his place in the Super Eagles squad.

Bayer Leverkusen’s new signing Kofane impressed immediately by scoring and assisting in the 4-0 win against Grossaspach, further increasing competition for forward positions. With late-season opportunities limited, Boniface may need to consider his options if consistent game time remains elusive.

Victor Boniface’s journey at Bayer Leverkusen is at a critical juncture, balancing recovery and competition, as he seeks to re-establish himself as a starter and continue his progression in European football.

Kelvin Omachonu reports that this situation requires close attention as it carries implications for Boniface’s club career and international prospects.
