The National Economic Council (NEC) has approved ₦100 billion for the comprehensive rehabilitation and modernisation of training institutions belonging to the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies, subject to final approval by President Bola Tinubu.
The endorsement followed the submission of a detailed report by an ad hoc committee tasked with assessing the state of security training facilities nationwide. The findings revealed widespread deterioration across most institutions, prompting urgent calls for intervention.
At its 154th virtual meeting held on Wednesday, NEC also approved an additional ₦2.6 billion for consultancy services to support the project’s execution and oversight.
The initiative stems from President Tinubu’s directive at the 152nd NEC meeting in October, where he ordered a complete overhaul of all security agencies’ training institutions to strengthen national security capacity.
Presenting the committee’s report, its chairman and Governor of Enugu State, Dr Peter Mbah, described the condition of many of the facilities as “deplorable” and underscored the need for swift action to improve the quality of training offered to Nigeria’s security personnel.
Mbah emphasised that upgrading the institutions would significantly enhance the preparedness, professionalism and operational effectiveness of the country’s security forces.
