Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) President Joe Ajaero has criticised the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for rejecting the Federal Government’s N70,000 transport allowance for public sector workers, describing the decision as improper.
Ajaero said the TUC should not reject an offer it did not negotiate with the government.
He made the remarks during an interview on Channels Television on Thursday, amid disagreements over the proposed transport allowance.
According to the NLC president, TUC officials were not involved in negotiations with the Federal Government on the allowance, raising questions about the basis for their rejection of the offer.
“It’s improper to reject what you didn’t ask for,” Ajaero said, defending his position on the matter.
The proposed N70,000 allowance is intended for public sector workers, although the details surrounding its implementation and the positions of the two labour centres remain central to the debate.
The disagreement highlights differences between the NLC and TUC over the handling of the government’s offer and the appropriate approach to negotiations on workers’ welfare.
Further clarification from the Federal Government and the TUC would be needed to establish the terms of the allowance and the reasons behind the congress’s decision.
