Manchester United are reportedly closing in on the signing of Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo after weeks of negotiation, as fresh reports suggest the Red Devils may have successfully triggered a key condition in the forward’s contract.

According to the Daily Mail, Brentford have submitted a £35 million bid for Ipswich Town’s Omari Hutchinson, a move believed to activate the release clause in the young winger’s contract. The development is widely interpreted as a signal that Brentford are preparing for Mbeumo’s departure.

United have been locked in talks for the Cameroonian international for over a month, tabling two unsuccessful offers — the latest being £55 million plus £7.5 million in add-ons. Brentford have held out for a higher valuation, reportedly seeking more than the £62.5 million United spent to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves earlier this window.

However, the West London club’s proactive move for Hutchinson has been described as a “major indication” that Mbeumo’s exit is on the cards. The 25-year-old, who has been pushing for a switch to Old Trafford, returned to Brentford’s pre-season training this week, although sources suggest a breakthrough in talks is imminent.

“Wait for official confirmation, but things are progressing in a positive direction,” a source close to the negotiation revealed.

Mbeumo’s potential arrival would bring Manchester United’s transfer expenditure this summer to over £125 million, as new head coach Ruben Amorim seeks to reshape the squad ahead of the club’s pre-season tour of the United States.

Meanwhile, Brentford’s move for Hutchinson is not necessarily tied solely to Mbeumo’s situation. The 21-year-old winger is also seen as a potential replacement for Yoane Wissa, who has attracted strong interest from Tottenham Hotspur and Nottingham Forest.

Despite having the budget, United are believed to be cautious about overspending, as further additions will likely depend on outgoings. Players like Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho, Alejandro Garnacho, and Tyrell Malacia are currently training away from the main group, with the club exploring exit options — although high wages and limited market interest continue to stall progress.

Mbeumo’s versatility, Premier League experience, and creativity in the final third make him an ideal addition to Amorim’s system. His signing is expected to enhance competition in wide areas and provide added depth in attack.

If the deal is concluded, Mbeumo would join a growing list of high-profile recruits as United look to reclaim their dominance both domestically and in Europe.
